Lemme tell ya why I own my own gear, ESPECIALLY the regs and wetsuit. One simple reason: rental gear is disgusting.

Imagine all those people with their various oral and bodily peculiarities chewing and tonguing and salivating all over the reg's mouthpiece and peeing inside the wetsuit...and it's highly unlikely the dive companies will take the time to properly clean their gear, given that there are so many to clean.

Now imagine you sticking that mouthpiece into your mouth or squeezing into that pee-stained wetsuit that will wrap itself tightly around your body.

Granted I didn't buy any gear for my OW (I didn't know any better) but after that, you can be very sure I immediately  did.

But having said that, I think it's a financial risk to get anything for you OW course as you can't be sure you'll stick with diving after that. :)

Thanks nightbreed!!
My exact sentiments...Im not a person that gets too affected by things easily but the fact that there will be exchange of fluids is acceptable to a certain extent...at least i know i don't have too much accumulated saliva and DNA on my personal mouthpiece...haha
Thanks for the reply  ;D

Thanks for the reply everyone...well I should put things straight first...I am not rich ya...not yet at least haha
And I have never dived.....under certification at least  ??? (That was in the late 80s on a friend's boat in Bali for a week)
But yup the intent on getting my own gear might be a solution to my endless sleepless nights going on the internet looking at some awesome gears...to say the very least...I need to scratch that itch...Baaaaddddd
I have always been compulsive when it comes to buying new stuff and I am glad to say that after reading some of the seniors suggestions here I will thoroughly re-consider the possibility of the purchase at this time.....I trust you awesome ppl
Truly appreciate the advise and it has somewhat put me back to perspective and allowed me to think sanely LOL

That said....maybe I will just get a mask, snorkel, fins and......maybe a dive comp or a regulator set...lets see if this feeling will die off in the following weeks to come...it has been 2 weeks so far  :P

Thanks everyone - I will keep you updated on the purchase...if I do make one
Cheers!!

1. I think a dive computer for OW may not be necessary but if you do get one, I think the Suunto Zoop is quite capable for not a lot of $. It's my back-up computer these days.

2. I bought a snorkel...and never used it. Waste my money. Never even used it for snorkeling. You might want to get the dive company to loan you one for the course. Actually, if you want, I can lend mine to you for the course. But if you buy one and not continue diving, you can still use it for snorkeling in Phuket, Krabi, Cebu etc. :)

3. Choose your mask carefully. Find one that fits. Many websites telling you how to do that. You can use it for snorkeling too.

4. You might want to get a full 3mm wetsuit. If diving doesn't work out for you, you can still use it for wakeboarding or kitesurfing (as your profile pic seems to suggest :)).

5. Fins...maybe not yet. Since they don't pose a hygiene hazard, you can use the dive company's. Get a pair of booties, though. Those are useful for any watersport.

6. Reg set...hmm...that's probably the costliest piece of gear to get. If the idea of using the dive company's grosses you out, you can buy a cheap mouthpiece, get a cable tie, and swap.

7. BCD can use dive company's for now. Later if you decide diving is for you, you can buy a jacket BCD or backplate and wing.

Tell you what, I can lend you #1, #2 and #3. I can also lend you an unused mouthpiece and give you a couple of cable ties. You can PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for the kind offer nightbreed!!
I will keep that thought in mind when the time comes.
I will most prob be doing my OW sometime in Nov...currently consolidating a number of ppl to do together.
Till then I will still be browsing the forum and prob shops yo have a look see.
Was at Amazing Dive earlier but unfortunately it was closed although I was there well within their operating hours.
Maybe a good thing otherwise I would've definitely bought something.

Consider buying a used BCD if you really want.  I bought one right after my OW pool session coz the supplied BCD by dive school had lose velcro, damaging my brand new wetsuit! The used BCD (softpack jacket style) took me past AOW, but I figured was not what I wanted.  I sold it again (losing only $50) before buying my backplate which is still with me today. :)
So they call it a 'FACT' coz someone made some statements on a 'FACT SHEET'? hummm...
