  • Whats a metal reg? Im using mk25s600, is that considered one?

Like a conshelf IV. The newer regs that have plastic second stages breathe more dry

  • I will take 3 fishermenfriends sweet before dropping into the water without fail, just park 1 each to the side of your mouth and last one left on the tongue. it last about 30min so by the time dive end just nice. If you want to try for the 1st time try sweet that are small or soft.

  • why would a metal 2nd stage be less dry than a plastic 2nd stage? i thought the dryness came from the fact that you're breathing compressed air.

  • The theory is that with a metal barrel or metal components in a second stage, condensation can occur more easily, making every breath through the regulator more moist.

  • but wouldn't condensation be bad for the regulator?

    http://airtesting.info/index.php/in-the-industry/managing-moisture-scba-scuba-and-osha-air-quality/

The condensation caused by exhalation only remains within the contained body area of the second stage when it is pressurized. That area is also flooded by water the moment the regulator is removed from the mouth underwater. The moisture doesn't get into any critical areas. So the condensation doesn't really play a part in the longevity of the second stage.

In the article, they're referring to moisture within the tank, first stage and hoses. If there's moisture in those areas, metal parts can corrode or bacteria can grow when the equipment is stored.

Anyway, I haven't noticed any real difference between breathing from plastic or metal barrel regulators at depth. My throat still dries up all the same.  :(

  • are you a smoker? did you smoke like 30mins before the dive and didn't drink some water?

i did the above and midway during my dive, my throat was very very dry.
on my next dive i made sure to eat something and drink more water prior to the dive. it was better after that.
    noob.

  • Im not a smoker.

As for drinking water, before dives yes. Between dives, usually a mouthful.

I tried taking out my reg to swallow my saliva every 10-15 mins. Felt ok after that. Think that solves the issue after that.

  • During the recent trip, I took the Woods peppermint sweets 5-10mins before dive, found that the sweets made equalising much easier, as I was able to swallow...
