  • You can take ur time.. swim slowly.. no hurry..  ;D

As for hygiene, mask and fins are the least of ur concern.. these can be cleaned easily.  You should be more concern abt wetsuits, ppl like to pee in them.. and regulators, ppl vomits in them.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Wah! Regs are too expensive now to invest in. If diving is in aur/dayang area, whats the water temp like? Would rash guard and board shorts suffice?

Water temp in Tioman, Aur/Dayang is a warm 27-29deg.... your DC would provide you a shorty (wetsuit). If you are young and fit.... or in my case, FAT..... then shouldn't be a problem wearing just rash guard and shorts.

Most ppl will start with Mask & Fins, Wetsuit.... later maybe BCD, Reg, Dive Comp... etc.

  • get your own mask and fins.. i think that mininum...

for your case.. i would get a mask first.. as your need to get one in your degree...

as for fins.. i would get after u taken your own water.. and using your open water to try out the different fins there is...  i know the temptation is to get a JET fins straight off.. but i think u can learn your skill first.. then get the fins next...  and dun just do OW only... arrange to do advance straight after... you get to dive more.. learn more.. and ROI on that mask and fins that you will be getting...

just enjoy diving.. dun worry about too many things...

  • There are advantage and disadvantage using prescription mask.

You don't have to worry about losing your contact lenses but you'll have vision problem on the surface if you remove your mask.

  • Hi,

Just go for it. Best to be good in swimming which u will enjoy more but if not very good you still can enjoy diving so no problem. As for the mask juz go to the dive shop and they will advice u. As for personal equipment for me its more on hygiene and if u take care of ur own equipment it will boost ur confidence more, also will get use to it. If everytime u rent its like a new set to u, hard to get use to it. But its best to get after owd n c if u really like the sports then invest them.

  • Being comfortable in water is not an issue for me as I was formally a wakeboarding instructor. But most of the time with my wakevest or what you would call a pfd. Only worry if I had to swim a certain distance within a time frame.

About the mask, was told by my friends to get my own mask and fins even for my open water test, for hygiene I guess. Could I get any mask off the market and fit them with prescribtion lens?

    yoz,

my own personal mask is fitted with prescription lens. I think most conventional design mask can readily accept prescription lens.... just check with the dive shop they might have stock for those prescription lens. The brand of the mask i am using is unidive...inexpensive and does the job well! hahaha

  • i was asked by my ow DC if i wanted a mask with degrees. but i can still see clearly underwater w/o aid even tho i wear specs. i believe a diver should be quite confident in swimming IN CASE of an emergency, there is somewhat something to fall back on to increase your survival rate. that being said, for me i believe swimming IS necessary. and how come you all thread 5min only, my one was 10min sia!
