Diving in New Zealand ??

  • Story....  ;)

My Kiwi AngMor uncle paid us a visit with my Aunt all the way from New Zealand recently. Yesterday, they came over to my place to pay respect to my Mom and I brought them out for dinner. During the usual chit chating... I ask my Uncle about Scuba Diving in New Zealand... to be honest, I think the avg S'porean divers knows more about Scuba Diving in Oz than scuba in NZ.

Sadly... my Uncle isn't a scuba diver... but he do gather the usual abalone, clam, spiny lobster, sea urchin.. etc every once in a while with his Moari friends. He also used to work in the Tourist Industrial, and claim that he had pick up many divers from around the world at the airport... coming to Scuba Dive in NZ. So, he kind of invited me to go to NZ to try scuba diving there... it isn't going to be cheap... so, doing my homework  ;)

    Question...
    * anyone here, ever dive in NZ (North Island) before ??
    * is it worth spending at least $2.5K and 10hrs on the flight to dive there ??

For $2.5K... I could LOB in Burma Banks or something....  :P

  • Personally, i have only done a day trip to Poor Knights with dive tutukaka 2 years ago, very professional and friendly group.. Good for an experience but if you are used tropical delights like philippines, indonesia, you may not find the sights as impressive. you will see some king fish, mao maos, blennies, stingrays. Still all in, a very pleasant experience, (btw, the resturant next to dive centre has great food and nice beers!)

There are a variety of options to dive in NZ. Did some research on other areas like coromandel, kaikoura, Goat's island, rainbow warrior....but went with Poor Knights in the end.

Don't go NZ just for the diving, there are tons more to see and do there! I will be there for 3 weeks this September!!!! :)

Wa, so shiok leh! Enjoy your holiday!

I also dived in Poor Knights years ago - nice kelp forests & giant stingrays... Diving there was a great addition to a very wonderful vacation, except for the chill (especially upside, windy & choppy)...

  • Thxs for the info so far...  ;)

But I'm kind of toying with this idea only... New Zealand is kind of off the map for me. And the cost is abit too high even if accommodation is thrown in FOC at my Uncle & Aunt place.   ;D

Btw... are the Poor Knights islands known for their Macro ??  ???

Thanks! yes, the stingrays are giants but friendly, and plenty around. I was told during mating season they are stacked up like pancakes! hahah. May consider Kaikoura next....otters? nice. was told by the dive shops, sharks are a common sightings too....hmmmm

I may squeeze in a day dive in other parts of NZ, but mainly there to eat, drink and chill!
