Sardine Run or Aliwal Shoal

  • Hi all,

Was luck to get a 50% discount voucher for air ticket and so am looking at going for Sardine run or Aliwal Shoal in June/ July period. But was told the minimum temperature there can be 16 to 18 degree C. I am very used to our tropical dives.

I hardly survived with my 3 mm dive at komodo when it was 19 degrees on my divecomp. Any tropical diver has experienced and how did you managed to overcome and survive the cold? I got no thicker than 5 mm wetsuit. So will be renting gears if I were to go.

  • I bought 5mm wetsuit c/w hood from online sports store last year for my bali trip to see Mola Mola. The temp was 16 degree on my divecomp. I feel fine with the 5mm. even my wife who is scared of cold is feeling alright. only area that is cold is the wrist and ankles lol. Guess need to get high booties next.

  • Aliwal shoals can be nice with the sand tigers, and surge is there. Baiting will hv to depend on currents. But yes, it will be cold.

Sardine run though cold should be fine as you are onli in water for a while for the baitball action. typically last a few mins. Then you are up to chase the action at another location.

wow...able to share roughly how cold is it like 16 degrees? Cannot imagine anything lower than 18 degrees. And to climb on and off the boat would also be a challenge....
