(1/1)
DIN:
KOTA KINABALU: A holiday outing ended in tragedy for a woman and her daughter when they drowned while snorkelling in Pulau Sibuan, off Semporna.
The Chinese nationals, aged 58 and 31, had just arrived in Semporna yesterday and were only in the water for a few minutes before they encountered problems and drowned at 9.30am.
Semporna police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Azim Khan, who did not disclose the names of the victims, said both mother and daughter joined an American couple on a boat to Pulau Sibuan at 8.30am.
On arriving at the island about 45 minutes later, the two got into the water.
“One tourist saw them calling out for help. The boatman saw them struggling in the water,” DSP Azim said.
He said they were rescued immediately and given first aid.
The mother and daughter were rushed to the mainland for medical assistance but died on the way.
DSP Azim said a post-mortem would be conducted.
“We are also carrying out a full investigation to establish if there was any negligence involved,” he added.
DSP Azim also said that police could not contact the Chinese embassy as it was a public holiday yesterday.
