Tioman - Cost effective way to dive?

Hi All,

My first post on ScubaSG. Recently started diving, but hooked to it. Now want to do many dives so that I can improve my buoyancy / depth limit etc to ensure I am ready for the big bucks diving like Sipadan, Similans & Raja Ampat (when I go there in future). Tioman looks like the best location to fine tune diving @ a reasonable cost & also see some good marine life.

So do most of you guys who go to Tioman, take your own transport (car or bus & Mersing transfer), pay for resorts there and dive using their dive shop, or book an end to end trip with one of the dive outfits based out of Singapore? Since we will need a dive guide & some equipment rental for all our dives right now, is there a diff in cost/quality/safety or not really. Since we will do a monthly trip over the next 2-3 months it will add up (we = my wife & I)

If the answer is the former, can you suggest any good dive resorts in Tioman (not looking for luxury - just good  acco & reliable dive shop)

Like you, I dive every month and I can understand it adds up.  I follow a small DC on a regular basis, make sure I'm trouble free and dived together like friends.  I get very good discounts. :P

assuming 2 person:
Cost per person:

Self drive (petrol): RM30 (RM60/2)
Parking:   RM18 (RM36/2)
Ferry:  RM70
Chalet: RM85 (RM85 x 2 nite/2)
Diving (w/own gear): RM560 (8 dives x RM70)
Makan: RM150 (RM50 x 3)

Total: RM913 (S$380) => that's not so expensive right?

No need to follow trip organizer from SG la. Why pay extra? I mean Tioman is not like some place that is so remote that you need to have a "guide" from Singapore to take you there. Go direct to DC anywhere in tioman and they will take care of you.

Most DC is doing only so-so business nowadays so they will appreciate any walk-in business.

I dive with TRD in Tekek.
