Uncertain species of ray at Tioman

  • Saw the below ray during my night dive at Paya Beach house reef, Tioman last week.

Looks like a coffin ray, however coffin rays are supposed to be found only in Australia.

Any other opinions on what else it could be?

  • I saw this also last year several times when shore dive in Teket. Its shape looked like electric ray, although I don't really think it was.

  • I think its a juvenile Torpedo ray (hence pattern haven't come out yet). They are known to venture deeper as they become older/bigger.
