Cost of employing a maid in Singapore

  • Hi guys, please don't hate me on this but I'm guessing since this is a forum and this is the off-topic thread, that such a question is allowed to be posted on here.

My mum is getting older and she is not as able as she was before. I am thinking of employing a maid to help her with the household chores. But I have never had a maid before and I have no idea what to do or how to go about doing it.

I'm thinking some of us here may have had experience getting a maid and the costs involved. So before I go to an agency and get done in by all the agent talk and all, maybe I could get some insights so I don't get cheated by all the talk.

So, can anyone give me any information on what costs I need to pay and what procedures I need to go through in procuring the employment of a domestic helper?

I need to know the initial costs and monthly costs if possible, from the experience of members here who have or had maids. I also need to ask, levy is monthly right? How about the insurance? Is it monthly too?

T.I.A guys and gals. Mods, I hope you don't mind me posting here. Really could use the help if anyone offers. But if it really is off-topic, I'll remove it.

  • I think we can let this question stay...

Does anyone who employ a Domestic Helper (Maid is not that a good word IMHO), can help TS here...

I know that the nationality of the DH does play a big part in the cost of hiring...

  • I got a Indo Domestic Helper to look after my mum as well.

I pay her $450 a month. Plus $120 levy monthly (discounted, under 65yr but has disability).

A few hundreds one time to the agency and insurance for arranging the maid (forgot how much). (mine was transfer to me from another family). Medical checkup every 6 mths. Under $50 each time.

She doesn't eat much, so food cost is low. Stay in the same room with my mum. Off one day a month.
Must buy her air ticket to go home at the end of her stay.

I am a good employer. From time to time I will buy her some clothes and give her gifts (not expensive) to reward her good work. I also plan to give her a bonus when she leave. But that is up to you.

As I understand under the new law you must give your helper off day each week. Meaning cost will go up if u nego less off day with her. Mine is leaving soon so I will have to go get a new helper too.

Good for you... nowadays, too many domestic helper abuse happening.

Also important to treat the DH well because they are at home with your loved ones... and god only knows what will happen should they go 'crazy' due to your abuse...  :(

    ... Or compensate them appropriately.
Maid agency will advise on the amount of compensation.

  • So if you give them the day off you don't have to pay them the $15? For that day?

  • Hi, here is a guide from MOM on hiring a foreign domestic worker. Do take note that you will
have to take a test online to ensure that you fully understand your roles and commitment as
an employer before you can hire a maid.
