Perhaps I should clarify myself. I'm not saying u should not get 'high end' gear.. I'm simply stating what a diver really need. Anything more, r 'nice to have'. Most 1st stages can support multiple divers at the same time (at rec depth), so u can pretty sure they can supply enuf air for even new divers doing 100m sprint underwater. But having said that, I do enjoy higher flow rate of my reg especially when filling up my SMB, I can fill it faster which help reduce me being dragged up while filling.

I totally agree with antacid, buying the higher end equipment will prevent those (me) with tendency to 'upgrade' from spending unnecessary $$. Since u will do it, might as well do it now! Like for me, I'm very happy with my dive gear and have totally no urge to spend anymore $$.  But sadly, I cannot say the same for my camera gear! :P

Regulator is long term investment splurging for reasonable good model should be justfiable.
I am using my MK25/S600 since the first dive and still happy with it until now and I don't bother to change it to "pre-dive" to "dive" anymore after couple dives.

The MK25/S600 was my first one as well. Still works well but I kinda don't like the weight of it now. Went with a light and cheap mares MR12 first stage about 2 years back as a backup and it worked fine paired with higher end 2nd stages. Now that i have a pretty high end MK17/S555 combo, it works well and is lighter and more compact than the MK25 so it'll probably be my travel reg and the MK25 will be the Local/Dayang/Tioman reg.

....... cool factor. I knew MK25/S600 was the regulator of choice for most but I simply cannot bring myself to like the design, especially the big S on the second stage.

I love this thread!!!

I havent dived for ages and coming back to diving (I left when the Mk25/s600 came on the market), I am trully impressed by how things have advanced. Well... Okay, most things are the same... More shiny, a nicer finish, lighter; thats all i really see as a diff..

My last dive was a few weeks ago at Manado. Lovely dive... Had the pleasure of using my Oceanic Omega 2 paired to a pre1986 Tusa Balance Piston 1st stage on the first few days.
Subsequent days were spent suckling ona MK25/S600..
Difference? Err... Quiet a few hundreds. Besides that, I prefered the Omega two.

So here is my point, there really isnt that much difference between the kinds of regs out there now. Granted a balanced vs Unbalanced system will definately see bias; besides that, manufacturer to manufacturer - nothing significantly diff...

Get the best you can afford, dont get ripped off in the process, make sure it works, make sure you look after it. And for goodness sake, looks really dont matter all that much... for Reg at least...

Now BCDs: Eh that one no same same... Skill tadah, style adah!!! Boleh?

this is healthy discussion. good stuff!

I agree that an unbalanced reg is not a death-trap. There is nothing wrong with choosing one, and yes most people would say it's good enough. It delivers air, right? That's what a regulator is for anyway.

anyway, my point on balanced vs unbalanced is that the difference in breathing effort will be most pronounced when it is deep, or when large amounts of air is needed. even if the unbalanced is well-tuned, there will still be a difference at 5m and at 30m. don't do a comparison between the types of regs in a pool, or at 10m.

try comparing when you are at 30 or 40m, in a good current and your heart rate is going at 100+ bpm. It's probably not the best situation to be conducting reg comparisons, but that's when you'll be thankful you spent a few hundred more. :D

That seems like a really interesting suggestion if we could will some determination perhaps we can run a reg testing review just like James' torch shoot out. James can arrange logistics please? Somewhere nice like Maldives or boracay and sponsored by SSG boss ;D
