Let's be fair...

It's up to individual choice where they want to do open water and with which dc.
I think it's not fair to assume that cheap is always sub-quality and expensive is always better. However, if something sounds too good to be true, might be worthwhile finding out how they managed to give at that price. That said, I don't really know any dc that's does aur/dayang trip at that price for OWD. Think it may be available for Hantu trip.

Which DC safe or not safe... I think TS can ask for personal/experience once u have found a DC u think u want to go with.

My 2 cents... From what I hear about P. Hantu, I wouldn't want to do my OW cert there. Spend a bit more and enjoy much more. But then again, that's my personal opinion. To each his own.

Happy Diving!

Not that cheap is bad and expensive is better but given that the TS is asking if there is a possibilities of doing OW below $500, I guess we are just giving him some cues or advice, if you will on what to expect.

We all know that its unlikely to do OWD even with $500 in Dayang/Tioman. If there's any DC that can do that, then its better for him to be extra cautious and check thoroughly.

Who knows, he might get lucky and get a very good instructor for that amount. Well, even if he is shortchanged, he wouldn't know it anyway, at least till he start diving more often with other DC or friends.

It's a common question for most here in Singapore. Instead of asking which is a better DC, they will asked which is the cheapest one. Sad but true but I don't think we can change that cheap & good mentality here.

However, for people like the TS, he's making good effort to ask question on forums so I hope he take the advices and opinions positively. For us who have gone through this, please be gentle with your "advice". Share your experiences for him to learn and not scare him off ok.

I knew someone that recently took OW for 390 and it's pretty shocking price to me ESP after adex. Heard the pool training only 3hrs.

Well.. Like what fusion says, you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

And who is or what is TS? I'm confused.
Diving is like passion, deep and sensational, and sometimes dangerous.

Taking a break from diving. Boohoo~

If the TS has just graduated from Poly/Uni/ITE etc, I think it's still possible to go back to the school he/she graduated from and try and take OWD through the school dive club. The prices charged are usually much cheaper than normal prices. Probably because they have large numbers of students taking at the same time.

During my uni days, you could take OWD course for $350 or so? Now it's probably more but still likely to be significantly cheaper than normal prices. The large numbers may be a concern but just check with the operator what the ratio of instructors to students will be and other hidden costs if there are.

My cousin just signed up for a OWC with her Uni at less than $500.

But I think its just bcoz its been organised by the Uni (maybe they subsidised).

Alvin, hard to find $350 nowadays even if school offers ><" ..
Ps: "We are getting old" :P

I would say OWC is the very basic to diving so its better that you get the proper and right training.
