AOW & Choosing of gears

  • Hello all !

    AOW-
Anybody know of a good discount deal by any dive center if there is roughly 4 people for Malaysia areas such as Dayang, Tioman, Aur for next year once season opens?

    Gears-
I was wondering if anybody would suggest to get basic gears first such as wetsuit, fins, mask before taking AOW?
I'm pretty new in diving but have been joining different group of friends for couple of trips and its gonna be ongoing, but I have yet to get my gears yet. Neither do I have any idea what type of gears to get as every individual suggest a different type and I may have a tight budget, its a pity I missed out Xmas sales!

    Let me hear your opinions?

  • At the very least get the mask first.  And if possible, fins (and booties).

That way you can at least ensure a comfortable fit as compared to trying not to get blisters/leaky mask etc with rentals.

  • oceanic is quite reasonable but not top range
usually divers own their basic gear such as snorkel, mask, fins, wetsuit, weightbelt
then move on after some experience, chitchat, courses etc
how do u know u will stick to diving and not do something else later? (esp after marriage, OMG :o)

i think if u buy all same time = dangerous due to task loading, and besides, it's expensive
buy step by step = get used to gear gradually and can BARGAIN if go back same shop  ;D

better to get a reg set or bcd first IMO at Adex if u can wait
rent first and ask other divers what they use, why, where they buy etc

I think the least to get is a mask... booties and fins would be great too.
I have Mouth piece and cable tie too... i change out the rental one and fix it back after the dive.
    personal hygiene issue. :p
