A major price discrepency

  • Good days fellow divers. I was hunting around for a local divers forum and spotted this forum! Like the deep blue sea colored background!!! Here is my first post to share a recent experience.

Been out of action from diving for a year after obtaining my AOW (Due to a badly broken ankle) and I am itching for this month end LOB trip to Tioman. I decided to use the trip to hone underwater navigation skills that I learned during AOW (and only applied practically for lesson formality) thus I purchase a dive compass, Suunto SK7 as recommended by former dive instructor. Here is a lesson learn on dive equipment price in Singapore.

Went to Lucky Plaza and check out this dive shop I frequent in the past but did not buy anything major from it other than silicone grease. Eventually brought the compass at S$130 after bargaining down from $165. Thought I had a good deal.

Two weeks later, I was on the way for a short drinking party with friends at Parklane shopping center and spotted a dive equipment "Americ Marine and Sports Center'. Saw the SK7 selling at S$90. Its a very good price compared to online and I will recommend anyone who want a compass to buy from the shop.

Its a good compass but I had did a poor homework in equipment shopping and ended up a carrot head to lucky plaza (not so lucky). Imagine if I did not do the bargaining and end up paying $165...Admit I am pretty newbie when it comes to equipment purchase. Lesson learn to do more homework in the future. Of course, I won't be returning to the "Lucky" shop again.

Today I went online to hunt for good forum website where divers market rates and reviews are found and here I am at Scubasg.

  • Very common lah....  ;D

I also does Photography with DSLR beside scuba driving... when buying gears, we always shop around before buying. Lucky Plaza isn't really a 'hunting' spot for Scuba Gears.... and also not for Photography gears. Its more like a Tourists Trap to me.  ;D

I'll normally get my stuffs from Waikiki or Oceanic....

Good day to you too. Thanks for sharing.  ;D

It happen all the time especially with dive equipment. They differ so much from one shop to another. Maybe we should start a new board like hardwarezone and invite all the dive shop to upload their pricelist for comparison. Any dive shop operator here? agreed? ;)
