Lembeh in particular, some of the DMs there will puff up a fish without being asked, perhaps its one of their tricks to keep customers occupied while searching for other subjects..I have a few offensive pictures myself of a single subject, the DM banged his tank to get our attention and then we saw the fish had already being puffed...we should have ignored the DM to show we're not interested in his ways of handling marine creatures, but at that time, we probably din think much of it and snapped away our boredom...

heard that the puffer fish can only puff up a certain number of time in a lifetime, afterwhich it will die. its something to do with the stress it experience when it puff up

btw, check this out as well. is that a finger holding the seahorse? wtf?

It's so cruel!!! Especially the picture with a finger holding on to the seahorse tail!
These people should be ashamed of themselves! >:(

Many macro photographers handle stuff from time to time. but after a while you'll discover that handling doesn't really help in making a good picture. I just thought the guy's justification was rather silly. And his pictures are really ordinary at best.  ;D

  • Dive NOW... work LATER. Sadly I'm working now...
I don't think getting a good picture justify what they are doing. :(

soft touch is based on our perception, who really knows how they feel when you're "gently" touching them?
Sad....

and really the pictures are normal... i can probably do the same.
maybe...
hopefully...

Whether poking or flashing at the marine animals, we are disturbing them, isn't it?

So what if a non photographer come up to us (and I say us, me included) and say it's disgusting that we use stroble and asks if we are ok with others flashing their light at us?

What if a non photographer says it's disgusting that we are stressing the critter by pushing the macro port/lens which look like the BIG mouth of a predator up close to the little critter?

Get my drift?  Everyone has a very different yardstick so don't be too quick to pass judgment.  If we feel strongly about it, approach the person nicely instead of confrontational.

PS - I do not know the person involved.
