  • - might potentially be more expensive and troublesome because you have to arrange everything on your own. what if the van doesn't turn up? or the ferry is cancelled? at least with a local dive op, everything will be taken care of. just board the van/bus, and switch off your brains. before you know it you're on the island and diving. i'd gladly pay $50-100 more for the ease and convenience. not to mention having someone to scream at if something goes wrong...  :D

actually i found an agent in mersing able to arrange tpt & ferry for me...
so ya, i still can scream at someone if thing goes wrong...
but hopefully everything will go nice nice la...  ;D

  • i have 2 on hand... tioman dive centre and bj dive centre...
    still deciding which to go
u may also try East Divers Tioman based at Tekek too. the dive centre is run by Singaporeans. their rates are quite competitive. can check it here http://eastdivers.net/

  • I did my AOW with B n J last year. They're good. Respond to emails promptly. Instructor Andy was great but he's operating from the center at ABC only I think.

  • Just sharing some of my experiences, I also did a 4D3N advance course at B & J too. Great teaching from uncle grahame... Strict uncle..

4D3N, I would say its a slow & relax trip.I still have 1 day to spare for snorkeling.

I would advise you to read some notes before going to the island for your course,if you have got the notes.  ;D

Actually you can go there by your own.

I booked 5 stars coach to mersing,if i never remember wrongly the timing of the bus was 6.30am.Only 1 time slot.$45 bucks 2 ways

Reach there around 10am+ you can take the 11am or 12pm ferry to tioman.

You can ask from the dive centre the ferry timing, they will have the ferry departure & return timing 1 month ahead.

You pay peanuts, you get monkeys!!

haha, erm. not meant to scare
just to say it's fun for group trips with friends or new kakis
single guys and single girls can also meet more people
i personally found the time outside the diving to be enjoyable
relac on beach, or talk on the boat and share stories, look at pics, check out the fish ID book etc
for me if poss always a nice cold beer after last dive of the day...so nice and relaxing!

  • I just completed my Open Water within 3 days with Eco-Divers @ ABC Tioman in Feb 2011. I went alone. However, have to let you know that because it is a short period for me, I needed to do lotsa of homework for the theory. I spent my nights reading for the test. But my opinion is, it is worth it to do in Tioman where all the dives are just there. I do not like the hassle of paying more in singapore, and then we still need to travel to do the open water dives. 4D3N should be ok. Anyway, the instructors are professional and they would consider your period of stay and adjust how to make sure that you complete all skills and are able to perform whatever is necessary.

PADI open water course inclusive materials & rental equipment - RM950 per person
accomodation for 4d3n - RM150 per person (for twin room)
so is about RM1100 = SGD463 per person

if 8 to 10person, can hire a chartered bus about SGD450 from SG-mersing-SG
ferry ticket will be RM35 one way

is the above open course reasonable? and diving at Tekek, is it very crowded?
