Pulau Aur, Pulau Dayang & Pulau Tioman

  • These two islands are the nearest dive sites accessible to Singapore. Unfortunately, there are no information here about them. Which one is a better option if you only have one to choose from?

  • Pulau Tioman covers a much larger area so potentially there are more dive sites and more variety to choose from. That said, resort based diving in Tioman means that you're most of the time stuck to dive sites closer to the mainland and the resort, meaning the more dived and less pristine dive sites.

Aur/Dayang offers less dive sites but almost all are accessible depending on weather conditions.

You can see roughly the same types of species at both places, depending on what you're looking for.

  • My personal favourite is Dayang coz its a small island and its rustic.

However rustic also means poorer accomodation and amenities.

Pulau Aur is bigger and it's just opposite Dayang and its accomodation and amenities are better.

Tioman is too touristy thus its accomodation and amenities are much better .

In terms of diving , Dayang and Aur (base on my personal experience) is much better than Tioman.

  • I personally prefer Dayang but that will also mean one and half hour more to get there from Mersing. Like Alvin mention, the marine life are pretty much the same except that I think Dayang has is slightly better. Also, I think Dayang has better reef. Maybe this is due to the fact that Dayang are not touristic, compare to Tioman. The island is only visited by fisherman and divers. Thats said, the accommodation is very basic, you will have to stay in a domitory. Tioman offer better accommodations and you there are more ammenities there and yes you can buy I Love Tioman or I Dive in Tioman t-shirt there  :P

  • The Stars there are plentiful. The whole sky looks like its filled with diamonds!

I prefer tioman but not for its water but the better living conditions and amenities. I would go tioman for a quick leisure dive  ;D There's a spa there as well!

  • It all depends on what you're looking for as i've said earlier. Based photographic evidence, tioman definitely has the better diving if you know where to look, esp for macro stuff. reason being it has more sheltered bays which offer better chance of spotting small critters deposited in these bays.

Case in point i've seen photos of frogfish, tiger shrimp, blue ring octopus amongst other macro rarities that i've never seen in 10 years of diving aur/dayang.

I'll be going this weekend to see for myself how good is the macro at tioman, stay tuned.

  • Anyone been to Tioman lately? Heard of the corals bleaching but how bad was it now? Thinking of a trip before season closed.

  • Went to Tioman last weekend for the COT cleanup. Visibility was 20+ meters and the corals were great compared to Aur in May when I did OW. But then it's not a fair comparison coz most of the time during OW is spent doing skills in bare areas. Didn't get the names of the places we dived in Tioman though.
