Ways to go for a Sipadan Dive?

  • Hi,

I'm planning to dive in Sipadan next year, tentatively Jun, but might bring forward to March.
(Actually wish to go way earlier in this year Dec, but find confusing info on Sipadan being the water condition is rough during year end)

I would like to know what is the most value for money way to dive in Sipadan.

And I would prefer to stay at a family friendly location that has events for kids.
Outdoor events will do, my kids are outdoor type, don't need computer games.

The budget is $1500 for myself to dive and $1000-1200 for non diver.
Of course, the cheaper the better.

    Thanks.

  • I think most value for money is to base yourself in Semporna. There are many operators operating from Semporna i.e Sipadan Scuba, Billabong Scuba, Scuba Junkie and many others but I cant recommend any because I haven't dived with any of them. Most have their own accommodation or can arrange one for you.

However, your budget is good enough to get your whole family to one of the nice resorts in Mabul or even Kapalai. Again, cant recommend any because I have only dived with Kapalai. Kapalai is probably the best resort there in terms of service, accommodation and proximity to Sipadan.

As for kids, I have no idea if Semporna is a family destination to begin with. Its a small town and there's not much to do there. If you stay on one of the resort at Mabul or Kapalai, your kids can go snorkeling around the house reef, walk around the beach but thats about it.

  • Thanks!!!

I'm getting greedy, planning 2 trips in 1 go  :D

Yes, I do intend to stay Kapalai if possible, and for the reason of the permit too.

I'm just thinking if it's more economical to book everything separately myself (i.e. air, resort, transfer) or go through a dive operator that do everything swee swee.
I went to the recent Travel Malaysia Fair at Expo, the booth operator there can't give me much "accurate" information as most are promoting climbing Mt KK.

Most likely, I wish to do a day trip on Sabah itself in some nature reserve which I saw a local package for it, which I plan to be on the last day.
So, tentatively, it's 4D3N on a resort there for dive, 1 & 1/2 days on Sabah main island (coz 1/2 is wasted checking out from resort and travel back to Saba) and 2 days for traveling in and out of Sabah

  • Its definitely possible to stay in Kapalai with your budget. Actually, you dont need to worry about permit. Operators there are reliable, you just need to make sure that its written on your payment receipt that the Sipadan dive is there. All the operators will guarantee one day of diving in Sipadan. Anything more is a bonus.

Unless your are organizing a big group, its not necessarily economical to book everything on your own beside the flight tickets. For convenient sake, go through the dive operator for everything except the flight. Most of the time, its actually more expensive to book directly from the resort.

  • Great, Thanks and Noted!!!

Yup, agree that for self arrange trip, the resort will not give any discount as to group organize by dive operator.

So, I should now hunt for a dive operator .....     ;)

  • For a 4d3n stay it might be difficult for any resort to give you a guarantee that you can dive Sipadan, as you have effectively only 2 days when you can go. Especially if you go during a busy period. Wouldn't hurt to ask though, I guess.
