Divemaster Prathama ceasing operations

  • Just gave a call to DP to enquire about apeks regs. I was told they are ceasing operations here. Their current existing stock has been sold to Waikiki. Distribution rights to apeks and aqualung will be announced at a later date.

Apologies if I got anything wrong.

  • Was there this wknd and had a quick chat with the owner. Apparently, it has something to do with AL trying to cut out the middle man and moving to selling gears directly. In the US, AL has taken away most of the distributors and start selling their own gears online.  So looks like AL is going to do the same out here. He kept mentioning that the writing is on the wall.

  • which wall? i go read..lol.

a bit sad that it's going direct now - prob. a wrong move IMO (service, customer care, etc)
they always try to cut cost but in the end the road to death of the business..

  • Not likely that AL will sell their equip onlines across the world.  It will be a very stupid move to do that to kill their own business.  Do not forget that DM Pratama are the authorized service centre for AL.  Online purchase will not be cheap with freight charges and it will only cost more to send the equipment back to USA for annual servicing or major repairs.  AL will lose more customers that way.  Most likely is the change of distributor.

Although I see many diveshop can service AL and Apeks, but do bear in mind that they are not authorized. Any problem with gears causing accidents, AL will not be responsible.  Warranty is also void if it is service by non-authorized.

  • unfortunately, what we've seen is that buying online for some dive gear like dive computers, regulators, BCDs, masks can be cheaper than buying locally.

if there is to be a global delivery model, then the servicing has to follow suit as well.. none of that "parallel import" nonsense

I don't think so. Divemaster was/is (?) the official distributor of the gear in Singapore. That's it. In other words did the other dive shops buy their AL stuff from them in order to resell it. That does not make the other shops "unauthorized" or divemaster the only ones who can service a reg - AquaLung has training classes all over the world and certifies tons of shops to service their equipment. Ask your local dive shop if he went there... that's it and you are on the safe side.

No major dive brand would even think of going all mailorder - I could see this work for some highly specialized tech gear, but AL is the exact opposite - they are very much looking after recreational divers. So having your stuff in the local dive shop on display is the most important thing for them... they have tons of shops in SEA happily reselling their stuff, only in SG do they seem to be trailing behind... every shop seems to sell them IF YOU ASK for the brand, but nobody seems to like to do so. I have no idea about the commercials behind this, but I am pretty sure that is costs them sales. Maybe that's the reason for a change?

  • My read on this is that they probably will keep someone as an authorized dealer, but there will be no gray market (like scubatrek) allowed here so AL can get the price protection that they want.

Also, if you look at the link below:

    http://www.aqualung.com/dealer_locator_world.html#usa

In US and a lot of the countries in Europe, the authorized dealers listed AL website as their website instead of their own company website. I read somewhere (can't remember the source) a while back that AL is beginning to ask their authorized dealers to sell through AL online store for the internet sales.

I guess time will tell and see what happens.
