Diving with Matahari Tulamben Resort

  • Dived with Matahari Tulamben Resort on 03 and 04, Dec. Definitely recommend its unlimited diving package, which includes 5 dives in one day, 2 dives on another day, 2 nights stay and food, all transfers. Details can be found on its website. We also had one boat dive (included in package) in Palung Palung and saw two pygmy seahorses and one black-tip! Their dive guides were really nice and helpful. The weather in tulamben was good enough, most time sea was calm, although sometimes it rained. The vis was still good, sometimes 15-20m.

Check my video, taken with GoPro Hero 3+ and Archon D34vr video light. It's a pity didn't see any ghost pipefish.

My GoPro cannot focus when taking macro. Any recommendation for macro lens?

  • Hi
    How's matahari's rooms ? Clean ?
5 dives a day - assume they r ok with 530am dives ? Do they charge extra for boat dives ?
We have been pretty pampered over at LDR but they are raising their room prices next year.
    Thks!

Room is very clean and close to the beach. Can take shower after each dive. I recommend the bungalows. They are closest to dive shop and beach.

5 dives is from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. No extra charge for 1 boat/car dive in package. Other than that they still have surchage. Can find details on their website.

U can rent tank only for 10,000 RP each including porter's fee. But I don't know if 5:30 am is ok since they are not open at that time.

And more, nitrox 32 is free~

  • Hi all,

I had dive over this resort for twice this years. The price is definitely way too cheap and true is nitrox is free if you're nitrox certified. Unlimited shore dives and near to the liberty dive wreck and.the famous drop off too.

Have fun as DM are all pretty helpful and certainly worth going there as yearly dive.

  • Stayed in Matahari from 29/11 to 03/12 too. Room was cleaned daily and their massage was heavenly. We took their 5d4n package which includes 2 day unlimited dives and 2 dives in Amed on the 3rd day.

Their scheduled dive starts from 6:30am. However, you could arrange for private dive for an additional fee of 100k ruppiah.  We managed to get into water at 6am with that arrangement and there was only 3 other divers around at that time. We didn't manage to do any boat/car dive even though it was included in our package as we were not informed that the boat/car dives has to be arranged 1 day in advance. :(

We felt that the guides are with eagle eyes. However, we do not like that they are constantly disturbing the animals, like making the porcupine fish inflated, poking the frog fish and scorpion fish with pointers. Maybe a little bit too helpful?

Balinese food served by the restaurant was good but avoid western food.

Haha, I think we were even luckier since in 6 of our 7 dives, there were no other divers.

For the boat dive, I think you should insist on it. Since I feel they are not willing to do this since it's low season and not many guests. They also gave some excuses but I insisted for a boat dive. They finally got a boat for us two and dived not far away from the resort. Anyway, it was still a good dive. I think it would be easier to negotiate with them if you have more people.

I would not recommend the PolarPro macro lense. Though it makes footage from 1-3m seats sharper, it's no use for really macro stuff. Even for close up shots of fishes like frogfish, any closer than 1m it cannot focus.

I'm waiting to try out the back scatter Macromate Mini. Tt looks to be able to handed close up macro videos better.
