Gili Trawangan trip report

  • Just went to Gili Trawangan for a week of diving with manta dive. Transfer from Lombok airport to Gili island were efficient. The life there were very laid back with some decent nightlife. No motor transport only bicycle and Cidomo. Basically the only setback were the shower water, water were clean but taste salty and alot of mosquito.

Diving were nice in some divesite. Although couldn't explore all the divesite due to big wave. Manta dive had their boat sank on my 1st day of diving due to huge wave. Wrong timing to visit the Island. Visibility were mostly 5-20m, sometime up to 30m. All dive were boat backroll. Below are some of the divesite i dive. Mostly are all drift dive.

    Stingray
This site is the nearest to the island and do shore or boat, Can see alot of dead coral due to dynamite fishing back in the old day. Not much to see but alot of nudibranch. Lucky for me to see a Black ghostpipe fish.

    Meno Bounty
This site were form recently as a platform sank 6 years ago. Have a wide range of fishes to see at the platform. School of unicorn fish, lots of scorpion fish, stonefish, sweetlips ranging from small to big, branded seasnake, damsel fish and turtle.

    Halik
Site are almost the same as Stingray with more variety, napoleon fish, school of bumphead parrot fish, cuttlefish and alot of turtle. Basically all sites have green turtle and sea snake. My DM told mi if i dun see turtle and seasnake at the end of the trip, I must be diving with my eye closed.

    Manta Point
Good site with very good visibility 25-30m. No damage to coral due to dynamite fishing. Turtle, whitetip sharks, school of unicornfish and sweetlips are seen almostly every where. Lionfish, Moray eels, trigger fish, types of pufferfish, trumpet, grouper, snapper and alot more.

    Meno wall
this site are a wall dive. just follow the current and moving up and down to admire all the living creature and coral.
Lots of nudibranch, turtle, lionfish, unicorn fish, trigger fish, and nice coral.

Overall the trip to Gili was a good and relaxing trip. Always lay around the dive center, they have hammock to let us lie around. food were alright with very cheap local food to restaurant. Gili Deli have great sandwich and coffee for breakfast and afternoon tea. Happy Hour start as early as 4pm, pubs take turn to have party so that it will not disturb the night,Only 1 pub is allow to hold party till late night. The liveband were good at Sama Sama, although mostly every night the same song.

  • On my 1st day of diving, DM told mi that they were going to a divesite call sharkpoint. 1 of their best divesite.
On their way there, they encounter a very huge wave and lots of water went into the boat, not enough time to pump out the water and the boat sank. But by evening time they are able to bring the boat back to the shore where the dive center is.

Sure.. It's always nice to share around. Getting there can be 2 way..
1st way. Take Silkair to Lombok. Air fare around $290. Transfer can be arrange with the dive center. 45min car ride and a 15 min fast boat.
2nd way. Can go Bali 1st then take a ferry to Gili Island. Duration around 2-4 hrs depending on what ferry u taking. I think 2nd way will be more expensive and time taken will be longer. So i recommend 1st way unless u wanna go Bali for a short trip as well.

Food wise. Usually breakfast was included but not many variety. lunch and dinner can go around the island and lot of nice food from western to mexician to daily BBQ food. cheap lunch can have it at Bu'De and dinner can have it at their night hawker call Borobudur. They have people selling weed and mushroom there but they are not pushy. So I got no problem with them.

Things to do there. Diving, Islands tour, surfing, horse riding, fishing and that about it i think.
Diving 35USD included eqiupment, mid budget room around 50USD per night, peak season around 60USD. For every dive u get discount as well 5-15% depending on how many dive.

  • just to add for people considering the 2nd option (transiting in Bali), it will cost you between 150,000 to 300,000 RP depending on your prowess for bargaining. To lombok they'll always open with 500,000RP but cheapest I've heard of others telling me was 250,000, paid around the 300,000 mark.
