Hi guys,

Here's a short trip report from a weekend getaway I had in January.

Number of days - 4D3N
Number of dive days - 2 days
Number of dives - 4 (its a dive holiday, not a dive trip!  ;D)
Travel time from Singapore - Total 4.5 hours. 2 hours by plane to Krabi. 2.5 hours land transfer to resort at Koh Lanta.
Total Cost - $550 for diving, transfers, accommodation, all breakfasts & lunches. $250 for air tickets.
Trip organizer - Diver's Outfitter

We took the 1pm flight from Singapore, and arrived at the resort at about 5pm Thai time (thailand is 1 hour behind). We had someone pick us up from the airport, and it was quick and easy. The land transfer was pretty interesting, as the van had to get on 2 ferries on the way to Krabi. Each ferry ride was about 15 minutes, and you can choose to stay in the van or hop off for some fresh sea breeze.

Amantra resort is a full resort with a nice pool & jacuzzi. The rooms are big and spacious, and most rooms have a queen sized bed plus a super single bed, and will take 3 people nicely. The rooms come with towels, hot showers, cable TV, and bar fridge. Definitely much better than the Dayang/Tioman "resorts"!

It was a 30 min van ride everyday from the resort to the jetty, where we boarded the day trip boats. They are LOB-sized boats similar to the old White Manta, and there's lots of space for everyone. Drinks, snacks, and lunch are provided on board. Expect anything from 8 to 20 divers, especially during the peak season.

Over the 2 days, we dived at Koh Ha (nice) and Koh Bida Yai (not so nice). It's what you expect from the Similan islands.. Big seafans, schools of fish, some critters here and there. Not much current and it was nice, easy diving.

The local dive op was Anti-Gravity Divers, and they were great fun. We knew some of the instructors back from perhentian, so it was like meeting up with old friends. The DM/Instructor ratio to customers was very good, from 1:4 to even 1:1.

Every night, the guys from AGD also took us out for dinner and drinks. Very hospitable of them. We had a whole table full of seafood and beer, and it came up to $10 per person.

All in all, a very nice and relaxing trip, with some diving thrown in. It wasn't fantastic diving, but it's good enough for a quick weekend getaway.

  • those big jellyfish are pretty common. you can see them in dayang/tioman too. just watch out for the small tentacles coming out the back.

  • so they are the stinger variety? noted :). C'mon share your garden eel secret! Was so frustrated with my unsuccessful attempts creeping up on them in Bali.
