Very interesting!  I wonder how keeping marine tanks and trading marine creatures can be part of responsible reef keeping. ???

I think some people at this hobby managed to breed fishes on reef tank and sharing coral frags, then this is a verys sutainable hobby, I think some serious reefers in SRC deserve some credit for their achievement. The destructive version is harvested coral from wild or exotic fish captured from wild without control. And this hobby is damn expensive and consume lots of electricity. I was keeping reef as well last time but now only salt water fishes. I still love my nemos.

Hopefully all the supplies are not harvested from wild... Responsible aquarium owners should ask where do their beloved fish come from...

Those that manage to breed fish and somehow grow corals are just the minority.  Corals and fish killed are many times what they can 'regenerate'.  Sustainable??? I seriously doubt so.  If you visit the 'farms', where many buy their pets from, most are caught from wild, and from what I heard, many were caught while 'stunned' by Cyanide! And you know what happen to the coral reef after that.
So they call it a 'FACT' coz someone made some statements on a 'FACT SHEET'? hummm...

OK.. I know this is OT.. But the same reason I refuse to buy coral trouts from places like Tawau Airport.. think abt it.  How do u catch coral trouts in such numbers?  U cannot throw a net over reef (they get stuck and damage nets), drift nets are too high to catch these (divers.. you've seen where such fish hide).  You can't use trawl nets unless u want to bring the whole reef up.  So, you can have divers go spear them, but how many of those on sale have spear holes in them?  So what do I think?  They can try fish traps.. bt there is also the possibility they stun them with Cyanide!  Skilled Cyanide fisherman can even keep the fish alive to be placed in your live sea food restaurant tank!  So even if you do not care about the environment, think about yourself and your family.. feeding them expensive, delicious coral trouts.. you may also be poisoning them with Cyanide!

Keeping aquarium is like diving, causualties usually comes from new tank owner similar like new divers landing on corals kicking or dancing on it.
Aquarium fish caught with cynide will not live long. This another lucrative business like shark fins which is very difficult to control especially when some exotic fishes can fetch $1k-5k each and exotic coral cost few hundred dollars. For coral SPS is easier to spot whether farmed or harvested from wild, if it comes on frag disc then it's farmed.

Never Dive in Sipadan before but I got this bomb experience in Menjangan Bali, like what you said we were about 20m deep and the kaboooom sound was freaking loud.
