Hi all...  :)

It seems that we are having quite a number of divers using the GoPro Hero or Hero 2 as their underwater Video Camera of choice (I'm a recent convert myself  :P ). Therefore, in order to make things less messy for readers... I'm starting this 'Offical GoPro' Thread for discussion on or about GoPro's little Video Cam.

For GoPro users...please contribute any information you could and share your Knowledge with newbies users...

Knowledge like -

* Your current GoPro setup... (geo88... if you are reading this, share your photos)
* Which flat port you are using...
* Accessories that are useful...
* Best price....
* Tricks and Software
* General stuffs regarding the GoPro camera.

Please keep all discussion here, for GoPro's products or 3rd party accessories only... all other camera system should be discussed outside here  ;)

Let The Discussion Begins

  • I've got a GoPro HD.

    Flatport: I'm using the Mako flatport, which works great, just a slight vignette on photos but for the price is great. Gonna upgrade to the newer scratch resistant version soon.

    Accessories: right now just the wrist mount. Still can't decide which way I prefer to mount but at least with wrist mount if you need your hands for something you don't have to drop the camera

    Tips: I'm going to order from Amazon the Wasabi Power battery kit. $26.99usd for two 1400mAh batteries (stock gopro batteries are 1100mAh) wall and car charger

    Also it seems to not do so well at very close up shots. Need to be maybe 6-12 inches away to get proper focus IMO

    Questions:
    1) still looking for a good way to restore color in my videos. Can't seem to figure out how to do it properly in Sony Vegas. Would love if someone could show what software they use and how to do it

    2) lighting. Right now if I shine one of my torches at stuff and video I get an overexposed white spot. Center or spot metering mode. Not sure if anyone has some input on this to get better clarity at depth etc

  • 1. Gopro HD Hero 2 Motorsport Edition
    2. Mako Flat lens with red filter
    3. ULCS ball joint mount

    Went to Bunaken in Jan 2012 to test the setup attached to a ULCS arm with Ikelite Pro V8 (15 watt, 500 lumens). Video resolution was set at 720p 24fps. Viz was less than 10-metres. Initial image was good during descend (5-8metres) but turned out to fuzzy due to insufficient lighting at depth (beyond 10metres).

    Next plan to upgrade to a 3rd party housing either Patima or UK-Germany and video lighting maybe L&M Solas 1200

  • My setup as below when I don't bring my Camera down. This is purely for video shoot.

    GoPro Hero II HD
    LED Back
    Backscatter Flat Port Housing
    Magic Filter (from Backscatter)
    I-torch Video Pro III
    I-Das Tray and Arm

    I edited normally with Videopad Editor while I only use the Cineform software for timelapse if I need to do some adjustment to the video quality.

    Because the GoPro is a wide angle camera, I noticed 1 video light is good enough. Maybe need to have 2 to light up the space. Best go for Sola 1200 X 02 to do the job. hahahaa

    The Magic filter work well from 5m-10m. After that it is all blue unless you have a light. I can't post the video now as my VIMEO account is maxed out. Got to wait till next week before I can upload another 500mb. You can see in that video of the coral reef at 10m has more 'color' with the magic filter on it.

    Overall I like the backscatter housing cause now I have spare housing for surface shoot and a purely underwater housing. Well and professional built. I bring it down to 36m at Yapak II in Boracay with no issue.

    I also bought 3rd party charger and 2 extra battery from Ebay. Made and came from China. No issue also. Also when transfer photo to computer, it is best to take out the SD cards and put into a SDcard reader to transfer.

    Only Problem I have with the GoPro is fogging issue. After 20min under the water, I can see the corner of my video got some fogging. Heard that this is a issue for GoPro.

  • Could anyone share what software you use to edit the video (mp4) ??   ;)

    Or does GoPro have some free software we can download at their sites... I tested the camera recently... even at 1080p... the video run super smooth on my PC  ;D

    But without some sort of software to edit... the video will be damn boring.  :P

  • Gopro has their own free cineform software. I don't see how to do good.color correction with it. So far I just use iMovie on my iPad for quick edits.
