  • -1 for flexi arms too.. i think they're more trouble than they are worth. you WILL get ball-clamp arms sooner or later..  :D

haha.. this is so true.  I'm looking to buy a set of ultralight ones.  Just that I dun really like ultralight tray and handle for ultra-compact cameras like mine. So still hunting.  :P

As for flex arm 'sagging'.. it does sag on land, but in water, does not really pose a problem.  My problems wit flex arms are:
    a. Difficult and limited strobe adjustment possibility.
    b. Not long enuf.

But its not all bad.  To begin with, its cheap and there are no maintenance needed.  Being plastic, nothing to corrode.  So, may work for some.. :)

don't really need very long arms. it's all about placement.

  • Thanks for all the inputs. I'll be doing a bit of research on the models recommended. My considerations will price of cos but i do want something that's not too bad and will last. I might also get a better P&S (S95 or LX5) for shooting underwater soon.

  • just make sure you budget in the housing with the camera. i think the LX5 housings are going to cost more than the camera.

personally i am very tempted to get a ixus 300HS for use underwater. or maybe a gopro hero helmet cam. haha

  • Yup, did some research and the housing for Lx5 will cost much more. Guess my options are narrowed down to S95 or G12. Initially was thinking of getting a casing for my GF1 but the price of the cheapest casing from 10bar alone can get me a P&S with housing and even a strobe to add to it. The OEM casing for S95 and G12 should roughly be the same in terms of price (<$300) judging at the current S90 OEM case. The G12 is using the same OEM casing for G11 which will not give you access to the second dial while the more costly ikelite (Ard $850) will give you full access to all controls. Still comtemplating on the cameras before i get the strobe.

  • personally i'd prefer the S95 to the G12 since the specs are almost the same, but the S95 is half the size. if i wanted to get the G12+ikelite housing, i would have gotten a dslr instead! which i have.. but now i'm thinking of getting hte S95 as a small backup/holiday cam.

diver's outfitter is having a promo for S95+ikelite housing+ULCS tray and arm for $1399 with 10% disc for S&S strobes as well. seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I use the S90 for video. nice to have some macro videos on my trips. works well with the fantasea 3w focus light.

  • I'll advise against the flexi arms as even the best quality ones will turn 'limp' and droop down from gravity over time.

There's a dedicated group of divers that swear by assembling their own Locline Kit to shoot twin strobes in Perth. They basically go straight to supplier buy a bunch of the necessary pieces and set up their individual kits. The pros? Well, All in, it'll set you back 60 bucks and with loads of spare. Note that I'm not referring to the 10 Bar flexi arm but the actual Locline ones
