"Breaking in" your new wetsuit.

  • I've just gotten myself a 3/2mm full wetsuit, and I've heard that new wetsuits can be pretty positively buoyant.

Other than piling on maybe - what? - two more kilograms of lead on you, is there anything you can do to accelerate the breaking in of the wetsuit? Like soaking in water or something at home?

  • Haha... Bro... U worry too much la. Ya... U are right that new wetsuit are a bit more buoyant. But I dun think it can cause serious problem to ur buoyancy, given that it's only 3/2mm. If u are really concern abt this... Just do request for a quick buoyancy check with the DM before descending to make sure u are correctly weighted. Bear in mind that I dun use the term neutrally weight cos u can never maintain neutrally weighted throughout the whole dive.

IMO, do try to rely more on ur breathing technique to control ur buoyancy instead of using weights. Personally I prefer being slightly overweighted to start with, so that I will not be positively buoyant atvthe end of the dive when my tank level drop. Back to ur question, I dun think soaking help with the "breaking in" cos neoprene compresses due to pressure at depths. No pressure, no "breaking in". But like I said, no serious concerns here 

  • Once your wetsuit loses its buoyancy, it loses its thermal protection as well.. i.e. worn out!  :P

So, no worries, just dive with it and enjoy the warmth.. while it last!  ;D
So they call it a 'FACT' coz someone made some statements on a 'FACT SHEET'? hummm...

  • I think 3/2 mm is a bit too thin

  • from my last week experience
better add another 4 kg for your first dive with new wet suit
then cut down eventually (see how it goes)

  • Question....  :)

Do anyone think soaking your new wetsuit for a few days inside a pail of water works ?? Let the neoprene soak in a few days of water... dry and repent. I aim to get a new wetsuit too... but no more dive trip for me till next year...

    Btw... anyone heard of a 2mm wetsuit ??   :P
