semi dry suits

  • I'm starting to feel really cold even in 26 celsius waters and in 23 with 6mm I was also freezing, all this was with hood and gloves, too.

Anyone know where I can get a semi dry suit in Singapore? Could only find the poseidon semi dry online.

I'm looking at the scubapro nova scotia if it's available here.

  • If you're willing to spend on a semi dry, you may want to consider the fourth element proteus wetsuits as well. Its construction is very similar to the "semi-dry" suits sold by other brands. It comes with good neck/wrist/ankle seals which keeps the water in, and they tape over all the seams to minimise water ingress through the seams.

This was explained to me by a FE guy I spoke to at ADEX last year, when I asked him why FE wetsuits cost so much more than "regular" ones. He also said that FE doesn't use the term "semi-dry" because they believe it's just a misleading term. Semi-dry suits don't keep you dry - in fact you still get wet, and the suit requires a thin layer of water inside to work.

I ended up buying a FE 3mm proteus, it's a bit of a pain to put on and it wasn't cheap. But sure beats buying a drysuit to stay warm. It kept me warm and toasty in 23-24 degC waters for 1-hour dives. I dive with a thermocline hood but without gloves.

    Hope that helps!

  • You mind sharing how much you paid for it? Will take a look at it.

I'm aware semi dry suits will still make you wet, it's just that I see the semi-dry suits tend to have much better seals to minimize water exchange and hence heat loss.

  • Fourth Element Proteus. All you need. I dived with just a 3mm proteus and on most dives actually found it too hot! If the fit is right, the seals are so good the is very little water movement, once the water is inside, it heats up like a dream and stays there. Best suits on the market, and as someone else has pointed out, semi-dry is a made up, misleading term. Its either a wetsuit, or a dry suit. End of.

Yes, sometimes the seal is so good that you actually have dry areas on your body after the dive!
