How to obtain MMSI number for Nautilus lifeline?

Hi All,

Need help here, I just bought a few pieces of Nautilus Lifelines from local supplier, at the point of buying I didn't know that this piece of equipment need to set MMSI number in order to use the distress function, and the shop didn't tell me how to register. I have the MMSI number for my boat, because for boat the procedure is straight forward, but for comms equipment like this, how to register?

He didn't mention anything about MMSI when I bought the units, I will contact the shop today.

I looked at the IDA form for applying MMSI, it seems to be cater for boat registration only. Anyway, i have written to IDA and hope to get their reply.

Has any user of  Nautilus Lifeline successfully applied and get the MMSI? Once obtained the MMSI setting up in the unit is simple.

Based on the other international diving forums, seems like quite a few countries no longer support the MMSI number for "dive radios" like the Nautilus Lifeline. After all, the MMSI is used to identify vessels rather than individual radio operators. Not sure if IDA still assigns for individual devices.

Perhaps the MMSI can be set to those same as the boat's? In an emergency, Coast Guard will probably attempt to contact the boat as well.

Nonetheless, I'd like to know the reply from IDA as well. Plan to get a Lifeline in the future too !

I was wandering why the Nautilus Lifeline designed in a way that must have MMSI to send Becon, i have the MMSI for my boat, but then if i use the Nautilus Lifeline in my own trip to elsewhere, then might cause confusion. I was thinking to just key in any number will do, because if I am in distress, do you think people will not save me if they can't identify me?

I have tried but still don't know how to register for MMSI, I went through the IDA website, the form for applying MMSI is only cater to boat owner, I don't see any application for radio devices.

Secondly, without programing the MMSI, all the other functions works except for the red distress button. Was tempted to use my boat MMSI but on second tough, better don't do that because what if one day I bring this unit go diving elsewhere and really drifted and need to press the red button, rescuer may think my boat sink and activate a big boat to come and rescue.

Just for discussion sake, what do you think if I just enter any random number like 123456789? As long as this is not a number belongs to a boat, and the red distress button works, if sua sua I need to activate this button and need rescue, as long as I am rescued, they can scold me or give me a fine, it is ok! Most important, I can be rescued.

is there a region setting? I don't notice that. My understanding is that as long as the voice channel is set to the same as the boat that you are diving with will do?

I don't think IDA caters to registration for any marine radio devices other that those used on boats and vessels.

I think for such hand held devices, it is best to configure it to the MMSI of the boat that you dive from since the MMSI for the lifeline can be reconfigured easily. and if you bring it to dive from other places, you can reconfigure it to the MMSI of the other boats.

One reason I suggest so is because in the event of distress/drifting, the nearest boat to your location would always be the dive boat that you dive with, and they can easily identify that the distress signal is activated by their divers and not other boats around.

And I don't agree that you should just enter a random number into the MMSI as it just wont work that way. the MMSI number is just like you mobile phone number. Even if it works, it may cause confusion in the event of a distress as it will create confusion and delay any rescue attempt.
