Title: Where is your favourite Malaysia dive spot?
Post by: timyang on 14 Dec 10, 05:27
This is by no means an exhaustive list. There are plenty more destinations off the coasts of East Malaysia.

So if you've chosen "Other"... tell us which one. Thanks!

Well it was sipadan when you could reliably dive there.

Lankayan was very nice and probably the best accommodation of any dive resort I have seen.

Hi,

I've only ever dived in Sabah (Malaysian Borneo). Best diving I did as a recreational diver was when I sent on holidays to Layang Layang & Sipadan - amazing drop offs. I dived at Sipadan when you could stay on the island and enjoyed seven diving days and many, many dives here. Still a fantastic place - just go when it's a quieter time to increase chances of getting more permits for Sipadan.

I have since moved to Sabah and, based on our experience running diving trips from Kota Kinabalu, would say the three large WW2 wrecks in Usukan Bay are worth a visit too.

i ok with anywhere if viz is decent >7m & no. of divers must not exceed fish.
no. of photographers must be at least half of divers if not it'll be like a disco.

I dived in Layang Layang about three years ago... and it remains my all time favourite diving place!  Perhaps I was lucky with close encounters with lone Hammerheads and the Hammerhead school on our very last day... but I found it the most thrilling diving I have ever done!!  Not only that, but the diversity of what we saw, 100% coral coverage, a House Manta Ray, Dolphins and even some Nudibranchs!

Living in Kota Kinabalu, I have dived Sipadan many times and am very fond of it... but my memories of some awesome dives at Layang Layang keep that experience on top of my list!

Happy Diving!

Dayang is popular coz it's cheap, very diveable, alot of stuff to see.. And is relatively near. Most dive sites are also within mins from resort jetty. Down side for dayang, resort is basic.. No hot water shower and some may not like the 4 hr boat ride. But all these, I can live with, I love this place and dive there several times a year. :)

I enjoyed Renggis in Tioman this week with some really big black tips although no sign of the whale shark that someone claims to have seen there!

Everyone raves about Sipidan so it is next on my list and I guess Dayang has to be the one after that.

Barracuda Point in Sipadan is in the TOP 10 Dive Sites in Asia!
http://divezone.net/best-dive-sites.htm

So it seems to be a really good diving destination!!! But People told me, that you need to book your permit 6 months in advance?! Is that true?  >:(

I have dived in the Perhentians, it was OK but not amazing but the Island is really beautiful!  ;D

you don't need to book 6 months advance, but its good to book early, since sabah park only gives out 120 permits per day to dive at sipadan, alternatively, go for the dive centre that has more permits,to have higher chance to dive in Sipadan. :)

its amazing experience, i actually requested to dive 2 times in baraccuda point rather than exploring more sites~ :)

Tyre Reef has tons of tyres, and loads of puffer fish but not many nurse sharks. A nearby dive site called the "Snake Stone" has numerous nurse sharks lying all over each other. Any LOB operator taking you to one, should know well about the other...

I'm hoping to know so that our LOB can visit there. Anyone know the coordinates?

Wow, amazing, Dayang is ranking so highly. Then again, it doesn't surprise me much. I always thought it was me, but the diving there was always happening when I used to go. One trip I skipped a dive and my girlfriend spotted a whale shark with her group.

Dayamg more often than not, in my experience anyway, has awesome vis and a lot of life down there. One day I saw the biggest lobster I ever saw. It was a monster. Also spotted huge barracuda, plenty of dolphins and a giant triggerfish. As well as your regular dwellers of course.

Dayang, never a dull moment. A bit weird how little press it gets here in Singapore.

What you mean by good spots? The DM is usually not paid and not like a dive guide so got to temper your expectations and also learn to spot marine creatures on your own and enjoy your own dive with your buddy.
