Sharks on the menu in Tioman
« on: 06 May 11, 15:38 »
Not trying to make anyone lose their rice bowl... However, shouldn't we speak out? I hope that dive operators can work together to address this... In the long run, your biz will ultimately be affected when the marine ecosystem at Tioman collapse... If you have good relations with the restaurants & the local dive operators, go speak to them, please, before it is too late... Tioman is a marine park. Are we to accept that we spend our $$, go to there for a shortaway & expect to see no shark because they have all been eaten? Time & again sharks are proven to be worth more alive than dead... If you are a true friend, shouldn't u be helping your friends see that? http://www.sharkdefenders.com/2011/05/million-dollar-reef-sharks.html

Shark is just a another meat, another fish? A shark is not just another fish... "Sharks are often at the top of the food chain in marine ecosystems, they are apex predators, so their removal or depleted numbers can drastically affect the rest of the ecosystem. They regulate the populations of species beneath them, removing the sick and weak and preventing species from monopolizing ecosystem resources." (Taken from Bleeding the Oceans Dry? The overfishing and decline of global sharks stocks 2009 WildAid UK)
Furthermore, the fishermen would be more likely to let the sharks go if there is no market for it...

This posting originates from a friend's FB posts on 3rd May 2011...
"Tioman could be the best place in the world to take a break from the noise and mania in Singapore, but instead some idiots spoil it with full volume outdoor Karaoke till 4am and serving baby sharks in resort restorants :S"
"All the resorts in Salang, last time I saw a juvenile white tip, a blacktip and a GUITARFISH being sliced up for tourists, all illegally caught in Tioman waters too. This time I took pics of local fishermen who were out fishing in the bay of Takek the night before selling a juvenile black tip to Nazim's in ABC :("

This is an employee of Nazri's Place on ABC beach buying a juvenile Black Tip Reef shark. This boat, reg JHF4909TU has been fishing with lights in the Takek bay at night, which is right inside the marine park zone!

the employee of Nazri's Place deposited the shark in the side car of one of the three local dive centres: irony at work!

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. If you have better solution/s, let's hear about it/them too!

Do they have a tourist comity?  If so tell them you have posted on this site and diver are aware, and will not spend their money in places where shark finning is tolerated.  I won't for one. Plenty of other places to go.
