Dayang & Tioman are our favourite islands in Malaysia. For the everyone benefit, I am asking if anyone has the best evacuation plan in case of diving emergency i.e. DCI

From what I gathered, the best method is to ferry the victim back to Mersing via speedboat and then ambulance transfer to Kuantan Naval Base, where there is a military run Hyperbaric Chamber or direct to Singapore. The journey will take approximately at least 5 or 6 hours.

Here's is my questions:

  • If it's possible to cut down the traveling time to the minimum?
  • How do you transfer the victim straight to Singapore from Mersing?
  • How about the possibility of air-evacuation by helicopter?

nope. issue was discussed in the old Fins forum. From what i remember, can't do air evac as procedures for the usual air evac by RSAF involves getting clearance from  malaysian authorities and usually it takes so long that a sea evac back to land is faster. guess it'll be easier to get a response by asking DANAP's John Lippman direct.

My understanding is that Kuantan Naval Base does not accept non military victim/patients and that SG is the nearest chamber we can use.

Looks like your helping DMT's out to complete their EAP  ;D

If evacuating back to Singapore, the available Chambers are as such;

1. Singapore General Hospital
2. Tan Tock Seng
3. RSN Hyperbaric Medical Services (Sembawang camp)

*will post tel numbers later.

DCI is not the killer, AGE is.

Can happen at any depth, without exceeding depth and duration.

In Tioman, there's a couple of choice - air evacuation at the airport via Int'l SOS, air ambulance, etc to SG or via speedboat evacuation to Mersing Hospital.

In Aur/ Dayang, the only choice is via speedboat evacuation to Mersing.

In any emergency, it is vital that the casualty receives medical care within the 1st hour commonly known as the Golden Hour in medical term. For diving related incident, stabilization must be done 1st prior to any treatment.

RSAF has no jurisdiction as both islands are outside our Search And Rescue Region. Diplo clearance won't come in time.

As for the contact nos, refer to the thread i've posted earlier on different Asian countries.

Yep, no singaporean helicopter flying into Msia. We might shoot it down by mistake. Which defeats the purpose of such evac.

I think air evacuation via Tioman is probably the best option.

I email DAN and got a reply from them.

I ask them the same question and here's their reply:
The general answer to this querie is that you are evacuated to the nearest appropriate medical facility at the time of the accident and it is the Doctor on Duty's call where that is.

All evacuations are organised by DAN and TRAVEL ASSIST together regardless of the method of transport.
