Thats good news. Congrats to your brother!

Yes, I believe there are many people who exclude Sharkfins because they are more aware of the brutality behind that decent bowl of soup.

From Wildaid's website http://www.wildaid.org/index.asp?CID=8&PID=485&TERID=421 There is a link to the youtube website...
I morbidly quite like the "食死有钱人" (rich ppl die from eating) but in real life the ignorant people die from eating these toxic "food"...

"Demand for shark fin soup, an expensive delicacy in Chinese culture, has skyrocketed in the last twenty years due to growing Chinese economy. Recent news reports in China and Hong Kong have circulated footage of an underground shark fin processing factory that uses industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to bleach fins.

This residential-house-converted factory is located at a village in Foshan, Guangzhou. Inside the shark fin processing room a dozen of workers, without factory uniforms and some without gloves, wash unprocessed shark fins in front of a small pool of hot water. The shark fins are then bleached in a bucket of bubbling pungent white liquid which, according to the workers, is a mixture of industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. The bleached white color is desirable and necessary; fins will not be sold or made into shark fin soup without bleaching. "

"Sharks swim at the top of the ocean food chain, and have done so for hundreds of millions of years -- since before the dinosaurs. But today, scientists say that nearly 30 percent of sharks and related rays are at risk of extinction.

Every year, up to 73 million sharks are killed for their fins, valued mostly for the Asian delicacy shark fin soup. Shark fins are considered one of the most expensive food items in the world, with prices reaching as high as $300 per pound. As a result, the wasteful practice of shark finning has developed: fishermen slice the fins off of sharks they catch and then throw the shark back into the water dead or dying. "

Anyway I understand from a friend that most restaurants bundle package shark's fins within the course meal hence to exclude the dish will cost more as they need to specially look for other ingredients just for the specially replaced dish. :-\

*Shrugs*

Oh well, like what many of you have mentioned, shark's fin is a form of "face-giving" dish for families and it will be hard for most chinese to do away with it for now. :(

Have just posted a discussion on REACH (reaching everyone for active citizenry@ home): All Government Official Functions should NOT serve shark fin soup! ]&tid=[[1099]]#top]http://www.reach.gov.sg/YourSay/DiscussionForum/tabid/101/mode/3/Default.aspx?ssFormAction=[[ssBlogThread_VIEW]]&tid=[[1099]]#top

"A bountiful year is drawing to an end, it is time for merry-making & feasting. I hope that shark fin soup would not be served at all Government Official Functions!

The citizens of affluent countries (including myself) & the consumption of shark fin, are the real plunders of the oceans, we are causing negative impacts to the marine ecosystems in other parts of the world & our immediate neighbours - Indonesia for example. These negative impacts might be permanent & irreversible and in the end, make them lose their livelihoods. I hope that the Government will take the lead and announce Singapore's solidarity to the world's marine ecosystem!

As a citizen and tax payer, I DO NOT want any my income tax to be used for the consumption of shark fin, even if the shark fin trading companies pay more taxes than me! In the long term, the extinction of sharks (& the imbalance of their habitats) will prove more costly to the country and the world, than the loss of taxes from these companies. As a citizen, I am concerned about the impacts that we have on our environment & hope to seek ways to minimize it."

Most of the materials used are from Shark Savers. http://www.sharksavers.org/en/learn-more/sharks-are-important.html

Now, if we can just stop preaching to the converted. If you want steady change, bring this out to the people who are not hearing this message. There is only so much activism that can be done behind a computer screen. If you want, we can arrange for a local screening of Sharkwater (FOC of course) and raise awareness. I think most people on this forum have heard this appeal.

In addition to face-to-face, email, IM, FB preaching to my friends & colleagues, I am trying to "preach" to my government too (again). Envy the HK anti shark-fin groups, they are very keen to get themselves heard by their government.
ScubaDiver Australasia (SDAA) & Acres had screened SharkWater, I think SDAA was the 1st to screen it at Lido. & WWF Singapore had screened The End of the Line. Would call upon the mighty Mediacorp to screen SharkWater & cc the email to MICA (which provides the funding?), won't that be really reaching out to the messes?

I just watched a disturbing video from Wildaid in Raja Ampat today (the supposedly pristine reef...)

Hey, people, before sending it to the PMO, would greatly appreciate if you could go LIKE it...

With more people supporting it, hopefully then the Prime Minister won't regard it as a lone crazy woman barking...
REACH (reaching everyone for active citizenry@ home), used to be the Sg Government's feedback unit...

Thanks in advance!
PS. sorry but I have problems attaching the link...

Hm.. I think the square bracket in the url is messing up your link. Either of the following should be able to link to your page. It seems that I can't "like" it in firefox on my side though, only in IE.
